Tame Tantrums for Good

A toddler meltdown in the grocery store. A school-age child’s tantrum because he didn’t get his way. A teenager storming up the stairs and slamming her door. Regardless of age, a tantrum is a tantrum…and they make us feel frustrated, helpless and often times angry.

Why Do They Throw Tantrums?

Why do toddlers through teens throw tantrums? For very young children, temper tantrums are a means to express frustration; however, all children quickly learn that tantrums are an effective way to manipulate adults to get what they want and to prove that “you can’t make me” or “you’re not the boss of me.”

Do You Contribute To The Problem?

Kids only do behaviors that “work for them” or give them a “payoff.” Children get a payoff from temper tantrums, otherwise, they wouldn’t continue them. Believe it or not – parents often cause tantrums to persist and escalate by providing the payoff. The payoff for the tantrum can be anything from the victory of getting what they want, getting your attention or engaging you in a power struggle. Even when the tantrum results in a reprimand or punishment, it still gives the child a “power payoff.”

Don’t feel bad if you haven’t been able to stop the tantrums. Discipline approaches for temper tantrums are NOT intuitive. In fact, most intuitive approaches to “correct” tantrums actually make them worse.
